A Visit with Jean Vanier
In the United States, there are over 3.5 million people with developmental disabilities, some of whom live in institutions designed for as many as 3,000 residents. LÔø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡Arche, the federation of communities for the disabled founded by Jean Vanier in 1964, offers a radically different approach to care-giving, one grounded in VanierÔø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡s vision of the benefits of a closely shared life.

At the over 120 LÔø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡Arche communities throughout the world, patients and caregivers create a home together, sharing meals and activities, joys and pain. While providing the disabled with a loving and supportive environment, LÔø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡Arche also hopes to promote greater acceptance of people with disabilities in society at large by integrating the lives of its residents with those of their local community.

A Visit with Jean Vanier presents an intimate portrait of L’Arche’s charismatic and deeply spiritual founder. With humor and eloquence, Vanier discusses the personal journey that helped shape his profoundly humanistic philosophy. Recognizing “the pain of what it means for a man or a woman to be seen as having no value,” Vanier helps the disabled discover their beauty with L’Arche, and in doing so, has created “a place where we can celebrate life together.”

The video interview with Jean Vanier, conducted by Bob Hannum of Nonotuck Resource Associates, Inc, was produced by Spectrum Media.

Baklava & the Meaning of Life
Where does one find the meaning of life? Perhaps it lies in the kitchen of sculptor Helene Simon, where she shows us how to make her world famous Baklava. Through a generous helping of her wisdom and insight about the process of creation, in both food and sculpture, we learn that true joy in life unfolds when we allow ourselves to do what we love.

Helene Simon was born in Baghdad, Iraq and educated at Bedford College in London. After studying Islamic art in Egypt, she came to the U.S. and continued her art education in the galleries, museums and colleges of New York City, where she still resides today.

As she approached her fifties, with her children grown and her husband and friends settling into old age, Helene was still searching for something. She discovered sculpture, and for thirty years, working out of a Manhattan studio, she created beautiful works in stone that are in museums and private collections around the world.

The Power to Change
The oil crisis of the 1970s inspired people across the United States to develop a range of solutions to conserve energy. Produced during that time, The Power to Change is an award-winning film featuring eight such projects that, through creativity and collaboration, show that sustainable energy is possible and better for the environment.

Led by individuals and businesses, both in rural towns and city neighborhoods, the projects include solar-heated barns and greenhouses, urban composting to reclaim vacant city lots, recycled wine bottles, and a wind-driven automobile.

Narrated by Joanne Woodward, The Power
to Change was made over 30 years ago, but its lessons are still relevant as we deal with environmental issues today. This film invites viewers to be inspired by the innovators of yesterday, and shows that we still have the power to change.
